The story, written as a spec script based on Hatten's love for the John Wick films before being purchased by Lionsgate, involves a young woman who is raised to be an assassin who seeks revenge on the hitmen who killed her family. The studio intends to expand the franchise with installments set within the same fictional world. In July 2017, Lionsgate announced the development of a spin-off film written by Shay Hatten and titled Ballerina. It was intended to be shot back-to-back with the fourth installment in early 2021, but in March 2021, Lionsgate opted to delay production and move forward with Chapter 4 alone. In August 2020, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed that a fifth film was also being developed. Principal photography began on June 28, 2021. Partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film is now scheduled for release on May 27, 2022, with Spiral taking its previous spot.
